about
“Taking and Giving” was inspired by a Tibetan Buddhist practice of the same name. The short description goes something like this: we imagine taking all of the pain and suffering of another person, and we use it as a kind of fuel to burn away all of our own self-centeredness; then we imagine giving that person all the happiness and joy they desire and more - health, food, success, beauty, friends, love… all the “good” things we can think of to help them attain happiness. It is a powerful practice for transforming our own hearts and minds, helping to free us from our own “bondage of self” to be of greater service to others. The obvious irony in this lyric is the acknowledgement that we are all wounded, we all seek love - and in trying to heal others, we really seek to heal ourselves. Steve is joined on this track by San Francisco Symphony violinist, Sarah Wood. Sarah’s flawless playing teases out a nourishing and delightful depth of feeling in this simple, yet profound tune.
lyrics
Taking and Giving
---
I would save you,
But I can't save you
I would heal you,
But I can't heal you
But, I can hold you
And feed you today
Love you right now
Take your loneliness away
Need you—think I need you
But I can’t need you
Want you, maybe want you, then
I would want to..
Hold you, and feed you today
Love you right now, take your loneliness away
I'll take all your sorrows, and pay you with kisses
Not wait 'til tomorrow for what your soul misses
Then, giving you love and kindness to start with—
Your deepest desire to gladden your heart with
Save me—you would save me, but you can't save me
Heal me, I know you would heal me if only you could heal me
